Race: Tour de Filipinas, Stage 3

Legazpi City, Philippines: Team Novo Nordisk’s Chris Williams earned his best result to date with the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team when he took fifth on Stage 3 of the Tour de Filipinas.
Following a grueling 208-kilometer Stage 2, Team Novo Nordisk headed into Saturday’s stage exhausted but knew they couldn’t waste the only flat stage of the four-day race. The plan was for Williams or Scott Ambrose to make the break to set up sprinter James Glasspool for the anticipated bunch finish. Williams made a five-man break that worked well together and built a maximum gap of around eight minutes. Heading into the finish, it was obvious the peloton wouldn’t catch the escapees. Wesley Sulzberger (Kinan Cycling Team) sprinting to the win two seconds ahead of runner-up Guy Kalma (Attaque Team Gusto).
“After two days of very hard racing, I didn’t have much left in the tank for today, but I tried my luck in the break to make it easier for James,” Williams said. “Vino4Ever were controlling and I just assumed they would bring us back. They failed to reel us in and I’m happy to cross the line in fifth.”
