Race: Volta Ciclística Internacional do Rio Grande do Sul, Stage 4
Start/Finish: São Francisco de Paula / Farroupilha , Brazil
Distance: 174 kilometers
Farroupilha , Brazil – Team Novo Nordisk rider Joonas Henttala (FIN) remains 8th overall following Saturday’s penultimate stage of the Volta Ciclística Internacional do Rio Grande do Sul.
The team’s strategy of the day was to pressure Brazil’s Funvic Soul Cycles-Carrefour, who currently control the top two spots in the general classification, to do the work on the front and protect their lead. But when a small break formed early in the race, Funvic let it go, and the Team Novo Nordisk squad decided to move to the front and try to reduce the gap.
On the KOM, with 25km to go, the peloton splintered, and Team Novo Nordisk riders Andrea Peron (ITA), Corentin Cherhal (FRA) and Henttala remained with the front group. Heading towards the final climb, Peron and Cherhal took the wrong side of the road, but Henttala was still well-positioned at the front. However, as riders began to drop, the Finnish rider was boxed in, and Richard Mascarnas (Uruguay) took the win, with Henttala finishing best for the team at 15th.
