Mandy Marquardt Wins 4 Elite National Sprint Titles
04 August 2016
Race: 2016 USA Cycling Elite Track Nationals
Location: Trexlertown, Pennsylvania, USA
On July 26, Team Novo Nordisk Women’s Elite cyclist, Mandy Marquardt, sprinted to victory, winning all four United States Elite National Sprint Titles:
- Elite Sprint
- Keirin
- 500m TT (with her 2016 victory, Mandy broke a 19 year old track record at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center)
- Team Sprint
Below the 11-time US National Champion, who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 16, recaps her Track Nationals experience:
“It’s been great getting to train alongside the Sprinter’s Edge Track Development Program, coached by Andrew Harris, and we relentlessly push one another in training. It was a memorable week, and I’m motivated to get back to training. I have a great training group (Sprinter’s Edge) and Team Novo Nordisk. My parents live far away, and they were both able to be there to cheer me on- so they’re my good luck charms!
My goal now is to make this year’s Pan American Championship and World Cup Team. I’ve been working really hard, and have had great results at UCI events this season, so I’m eager to compete more internationally. As I reach the international stage, it’s all about the details. I’ve been working with a nutritionist, Dr. K.C. Wilder – my Elite Mental Edge Coach, Sprinter’s Edge and Team Novo Nordisk.
I couldn’t do it alone, it really takes a village to make it all happen. Getting the opportunity to represent Team USA again at these events would be a small stepping stone in this 4-year process of making it to the 2020 Olympic Games!”
Here is what Mandy’s coach, Andrew Harris, had to say about her inspirational wins:
“Mandy Marquardt had a stellar performance during our National Championships. She completed the triple in the individual women’s sprint events, earning gold in the Sprint, Keirin, and 500mTT. She also rode the fastest 200m time an American woman has ever ridden at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. In the 500mTT she broke the great Felica Ballanger’s track record that has stood for 19 years. Mandy also paired with Colleen Gulick to take the title in the team sprint. Mandy has grown into a focused, driven athlete with her nose pointed to big performances in the future. Mandy trains with the Sprinters Edge group but wears the colors of Team Novo Nordisk. She’s a true inspiration and ambassador; supporting the mission to inspire, educate, and empower people affected by diabetes.”
