Team Novo Nordisk return to Spain for GP Miguel Indurain
30 March 2022
The world’s first all diabetes professional cycling team head to Spain this weekend for the semi-classic GP Miguel Indurain, making a return appearance at the tough one-day race in Navarre.
Spanish climber David Lozano is set to lead the team after 4th place in the recent South Aegean Tour alongside former Hungarian champion Peter Kusztor and who arrives fresh from a solid performance at the Tour of Rhodes.
“I’m super excited to be back racing at GP Miguel Indurain,” began Lozano. “Racing in Spain always gives me an extra lift and as a team we have started this season really well and produced some positive performances so far and I hope we can continue like this at the weekend.”
“The sensations are good after Rhodes and the good results set me up nicely for a solid ten days of training at home and we’re looking forward to Saturday even if it will be a very hard race with a challenging, hilly parcours that can often be made more difficult by the unpredictable weather conditions. But we’ve raced here before and to a certain extent, we know what to expect.”
French climber Lucas Dauge and Brit Sam Brand both come in after recently racing in Rwanda and Greece respectively and will play key support roles for Lozano and Kusztor.
“We’ve raced GP Miguel Indurain a few times now and it’s always a very hard race,” said General Manager Vassili Davidenko. “The course includes repeated hard ascents around Estella-Lizarra and we will need to be switched on and at our best to come through the race in good shape.”
“The guys did a great job at the recent races on Rhodes and we need to take confidence from those performances and carry that forward. There are no easy races out there and it’s important that we don’t let our level slip.”
American Logan Phippen completes the line-up alongside experienced Irishman Stephen Clancy and Italian neo-pro Filippo Ridolfo.
It will be a long day out as the race covers 200 kilometers over brutal terrain in Navarre and 2022 will mark the 73rd edition after the race underwent a name change from “Grand Prix Navarre” to “Grand Prix Miguel Indurain” in 1998 to honour the Spanish cycling legend.
