Mass crash at Elfstedenronde breaks up plans for TNN
A huge crash took down half the peloton inside the final 30 kilometers at Elfstedenronde Bruggein Belgium with Team Novo Nordisk unfortunately seeing five riders hit the deck and road captain Peter Kusztor managing to escape the chaos and finish just off the front.
Sports Director Gennady Mikhaylov:
“It was a real dose of bad luck with the crash today, we were positioned well and riding together as a team when someone crashed to the right as we hit a cobble section and took down most of our guys. Only Peter and Filippo managed to avoid it.”
“Thankfully everyone seems to be ok, Andrea we need to look at tonight, he banged his knee pretty hard and we have the Tour of Belgium coming up on Wednesday and we need to be ready. Peter and Filippo just missed the crash and Peter did a great job to keep the momentum going and try his best to finish as high as possible.”
Peter Kusztor:
“We were all together throughout the race today, everyone working for each other and communicating really well about our objective to position Andrea and Matyas for the final. Then boom. Out of nowhere 40 or 50 guys go down and I turned and saw nearly all of us on the ground. The only thing for me and Filippo to do was push on and try our best to stay with the sprinters.”
“Unfortunately Pippo had a flat on the last lap, so I was alone then and held on to finish in the bunch. Yes we had some bad luck today, but that’s sport and it can happen to anyone. It’s important to move on to the next objective now.”
