Pro Track Rider Mandy Marquardt Reflects on Unique 2023 Track World Championships
25 August 2023
After a few days of rest, Team Novo Nordisk Pro Track Rider Mandy Marquardt shared her thoughts on competing at the first unified UCI World Championships, which brought together 13 different cycling World Championships across at least six different locations around Glasgow and southern Scotland, in August.
Typically held in the late winter, the Track World Championships were shifted to this summer, a timing that will help with preparation for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. Marquardt represented the United States in the Women’s Team Sprint, Women’s Time Trial and Women’s Sprint at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.
“The Super Worlds was a unique experience with every cycling discipline represented. To race at the World Championships, you need to be ranked high individually and in the team sprint event, which secures country quota spots to race. It’s always a race to the race,” Marquardt said.
Ranked 9th in the UCI Women Elite 500m Time Trial Ranking, Marquardt is also the highest-ranked American in the UCI Women Elite Sprint Ranking, and in the UCI Women Elite Keirin Ranking.
“These women were flying,” the reigning Time Trial and Keirin National Champion emphasized. “Hard-fought Olympic qualifying points were on the line and there are more events ahead.”
Marquardt, racing with Keely Ainslie & Kayla Hankins, finished 11th in the Women’s Team Sprint on August 3, 16th in the Women’s Trial on August 4th and 24th in the Women’s Sprint on August 9th.
“I hit some personal goals, but am always eager for more. After seven straight months of consistent travel and international racing, I am happy to get back into some uninterrupted training, but first, a little physical and mental reset.”
After taking time to rest and recharge at home with family and friends, Marquardt will return to the track and the gym, with one big event remaining on the calendar this year. She will represent the United States once again at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, October 24-27.
Marquardt was an instrumental part of the USA Track Team that competed at the 2023 Pan American Continental Track Championships in June to help qualify the United States and its athletes for the Pan American Games.
