Breakaway action nets Lozano mountains jersey at Maryland Classic
04 September 2023
Spanish climber David Lozano sprang to life on the punchy roads of North Baltimore County as the Catalan took the available mountain points from the days breakaway to win the Maryland Classic climbers jersey for Team Novo Nordisk.
General Manager Vassili Davidenko:
“We had a plan to try and get David up the road today and we knew the course could suit him after his strong ride here last year. It was always unlikely that the first move would stay away this time around, but David took his chances and attacked hard to take maximum GPM points on every opportunity.”
“To come away with the climbers jersey as an American registered team at the biggest race in America is fantastic for us and our mission to inspire everyone out there with diabetes. We really couldn’t have asked for more today, up against some of the biggest teams in the world on a super hard course and coming away with jersey is a great result for us.”
David Lozano:
“I remember very well from last year just how tough this race is, but I also remember enjoying the parcours and I knew that the climb up to Prettyboy Dam was one that suited my characteristics.”
“There were a few attacks right from the start and Sam, Hamish and Filippo all were off the front at some point and when Hamish’s effort came back that was when I went.
“I was looking at the group I was in and I felt confident that I could attack over the climb and get the points. Fortunately I was able to and yeah, when we were caught by the bunch I was pretty wasted, but I knew at that point all I had to do was finish in the peloton.”
