Kopecky brings curtain down on season in Műnsterland
03 October 2024
It has been another excellent season for Czech sprinter Matyas Kopecky and Team Novo Nordisk with the 21-year-old showing remarkable consistency to achieve close to 20 top ten finishes through the year.
The fairy tale ending to the season however, wasn’t to be in Germany today at the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro as Kopecky slipped back in the final to finish 22nd, hundredths of a second away from another top ten.
“I could definitely feel some fatigue in my legs today,” began Kopecky. “Everyone is tired at this stage of the season and despite that we were motivated to give our all and get another good result today. It just wasn’t to be in the end.”
“The final was a very technical city circuit and I was fighting for position a lot, slipping back 20 places on the turns and then using energy to move back up before the next corner came. It was a losing battle in that situation, because by the time we hit the final 500m and the sprint was unfolding I was spent.”
With 200km of racing in Münsterland marking the end of a season that started back in January for Kopecky at the Volta Valenciana, now is the time to rest and reset in the off season before the preparations for 2025 begin.
“I’m happy with how the year has gone to be honest,” reflected Kopecky. “Of course, I set the goal of a race win and we didn’t get it this year, but we came close many times in big races and that feels good. The consistency has been there throughout, and we have a few young riders like myself, who are all developing together which makes for nice motivation for us all to continue following an upward trajectory and keep showing the world what’s possible with diabetes.”
