Megias Fights in the Tour de Korea Breakaway

Distance: 85.8 kilometers

Daejeon, Korea – Team Novo Nordisk’s Javier Megias (ESP) battled in the main breakaway on Wednesday’s stage 4 of the Tour de Korea.

At just 85.8km, the stage was the second shortest of the race, comprised of five, 16.8-km laps through the metropolitan city of Daejeon. And after the first 2km, five riders, including Megias, escaped off the front.

The peloton, however, was determined to keep the break in its sites, but the leaders worked hard to stay away and eventually established a maximum gap of 2:30.

As the race approached the final 10km, Megias and the four riders clung to a 1:00 minute advantage, and made one final push to hold off the encroaching peloton. But the peloton gained momentum and was able to reabsorb the break with 2km to go.

Inside the peloton, the Team Novo Nordisk squad worked to get Andrea Peron (ITA) into position for the final sprint. Brenton Jones (Drapac Professional Cycling) edged outJon Abersturi (Team UKYO) to take the stage win, and Peron finished just outside the top 10 at 13th.

“Again, the guys worked well together,” Team Novo Nordisk Sport Director Massimo Podenzana said. “Unfortunately, Peron has not had the legs to do well in the sprints. But Javier fought hard in the break, and we’re eager to go for points in the upcoming stages.”
