Attack filled finale at Circuit de Wallonie
09 May 2024
Team Novo Nordisk returned to Belgian roads today in Charleroi at the Circuit de Wallonie with the goal of supporting team captain Andrea Peron deep into the closing circuits around Mont sur Marchienne as the experienced Italian ultimately bagged a top 20 in the reduced bunch kick.
Sports director Gennady Mikhaylov:
“We knew what we were in for today, it is a tough race and barring any unexpected eventualities it is all about the final laps and keeping your leader out of the wind for as long as possible and help him into the best positions.”
“The guys tried hard to support Andrea, but he had to look after himself for longer than we would have liked, and the result reflects that. Alessandro made it back across to the front group at the end, but it was too late to make a difference. I think our younger guys learned a lot today and the experience is always valuable.”
Andrea Peron:
“I felt good on the laps around Mont sur Marchienne and tried to keep myself sheltered, but that got harder as the group thinned out each time over the climb and my goal was to make it to 1.5km to go still at the front with as much energy left as I could.”
“It was a big wide road for the sprint, very open and I think a top ten was possible, I missed one or two meters of punch at the end, but I’m feeling good ahead of next week’s Tour of Hellas, so now we look forward to Greece and aim to repeat our performances from the Tour of Turkey.”
