Big day out for Kopecky at Gran Premio Miguel Indurain
01 April 2023
Former Czech U19 champion Matyas Kopecky made his way into the early breakaway for Team Novo Nordisk at today’s Gran Premio Miguel Indurain, his first time at the race and his first breakaway as a professional.
Head sports director Massimo Podenzana:
“It’s often a race and a finish for the climbers those who are fast finishers, and not a final that particularly suited us. So, it was important that we showed ourselves in the breakaway again and this time Matyas stepped up.”
“Like last week in Italy, the move went early and this time it was Matyas who started it and with the other three guys, he formed a strong quartet and he gained some very valuable experience out there today. It’s a tough race and for the guys to get another 200km of hilly racing in the legs ahead of next weeks return to Belgium at Scheldeprijs will hopefully have done us some good.”
Matyas Kopecky:
“My first pro breakaway and man it was a hard one! I loved it though and it’s great to tick another first off the check list, especially in a race like this. The climbs were so steep, but the group collaborated really well together and we didn’t get caught until 67km to go, so we had a long day out there.”
“We knew beforehand with the parcours and the altitude meters, that the final wouldn’t suit me at all, so the breakaway was going to be the best option. I attacked very early and managed to get a gap and the other three guys made it over to me. They were all climbers, so I struggled a little, but it was a pleasure to ride with them and it’s a great experience to have before Scheldeprijs on Wednesday.”
