Kopecky & Peron make the cut at Koksijde Classic
17 March 2023
Todays Koksijde Classic wound its way east across the windswept coast of Northern Belgium with Matyas Kopecky and Andrea Peron both on the right side of the splits for Team Novo Nordisk.
Sports Director Gennady Mikhaylov:
“The race started to split into small groups within the last 60km when UAE put the hammer down in the wind on the open roads and sparked some echelons. Both Andrea and Matyas were positioned well and made it into the front group along with Declan, who tried hard but dropped as we hit the local laps.”
“It was a high pace all the way into Koksijde and even though the peloton reformed, there weren’t too many riders left in there. By the last lap it was a case of who had the most left and Matyas tried his best to work for Andrea in the final. Good job and a good result.”
Andrea Peron:
“We’re already showing better classics from than ever before and I really enjoyed today. Matyas and I were in the front group throughout and it’s a buzz going up the Kemmelberg feeling good.”
“The final laps were fast and the last right hander after the roundabout about 1km from the finish was petty hairy but after getting a couple of looks at it, we knew where we needed to try and be. I’m happy, we rode well as a team and got a good result.”
Matyas Kopecky:
“Today was really good. Satisfying. We were always among the first 40 riders and when the big teams gave it some gas we stayed up there.”
“I tried to help Andrea as much as I could in the final, but I lost him a little at the end. I thought he was behind me, but I should have known better. He was in front of me sprinting into the top 20.”
