Experience counted once more for Team Novo Nordisk’s star climber David Lozano at the Utsunomiya Japan Cup as the 35-year-old saved the day with another stellar performance in a race he loves.
“We know how important Japan Cup is for our team and our sponsor Novo Nordisk,” said Lozano. “That’s always in the back of your head when your suffering on the climbs deep into the race, so many people are watching us here alongside Novo Nordisk Japan and you don’t want to let them down.”
After all these years Lozano knows the roads around Mount Kogashiyama well and was able to manage his effort in order to survive the laps of attrition as riders fell by the wayside each time the bunch passed the line.
“Every race we do the bunch is always moving so fast,” contoured Lozano. “That’s pro racing now, the level goes up every year, nutrition gets better, technology gets better and as a result speeds get higher. You know that one little mistake gets punished and I lost some ground at a crucial part of the race when I had to move off the road to avoid hitting another roder and it cost me.”
“I couldn’t regain my position from there and pushed as hard as I could to finish as high as possible. We know from the reactions of our fans and everyone we have met here in Japan that we have had a positive impact here again. In the end that plays such a big part of what we do, being ambassadors for the world’s diabetes community, so to do well in front of everyone here is a nice way to finish the season.”
