Maurten: Irvine and Henttala share testimonials

Earlier this year Team Novo Nordisk announced a new partnership with Swedish sports nutrition pioneers Maurten. Nutrition is vitally important as Team Novo Nordisk professional athletes race at the top level of the sport while living with type 1 diabetes.

Maurten provides natural carbohydrate-based products for optimal energy which fits perfectly into our performance aims. A few months into this relationship, this is what some of the TNN athletes have to say. 

Declan Irvine – Maurten have come on board this year and they have got me through the racing in Greece. The racing in Greece was so hectic at 40 – 50km/h crosswinds so it was too hectic to try to eat a bar or a rice cake so all the guys were relying on the Mix 320 and the Mix 160. The gels were perfect too. It’s great to have the 320 there when you really need it, on the tough stages at the Tour of Rhodes I found it really helpful when going deep on the climbs and needed to recover quickly for the next effort. It’s really good race fuel. I don’t think I’ve had so much energy in a race before. From a performance point of view and a diabetes management one, they are a really good partner, I have nothing to complain about.

Joonas Henttala – I think it’s been a game changer for us. Sometimes during hard races, it can be a little difficult for us to get the blood sugar up. The Mix 320 has saved me many times when the blood sugar is going low and you just need a big hit. Just having that safety of 80 grams of carbs in a bottle is huge. You basically have two big sips then you’re good to go.

It’s really easy, so I don’t need to stress about having enough gels in my pockets or having enough bars, it’s easy to grab a bottle from the car and you’re good to go for the next hour with plenty of carbs in your bottle.

For racing, the Mix 320 is my favorite for sure. For training I like the 160. I like to save the 320 for racing for that extra hit. I occasionally use the caffeine gels, especially in the last two hours of a race, I can really feel the difference. They make a really nice range of products, everyone I’ve spoken to in the team is really happy with it.
