PROFILE
Growing up in a close-knit family in China, Dong Huang’s journey has been shaped by both personal challenges and a passion for cycling. His life took a significant turn at just seven years old when his family moved from Kachang Town to Yingjiang County due to his father’s job transfer. It was during this time, in the third grade, that Dong was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
While Dong doesn’t recall all the details of his diagnosis, the fear and pain of injections and blood glucose tests remain vivid memories. At the time, limited access to proper medical supplies heightened the difficulty of living with this condition. His family initially misunderstood the nature of Type 1 diabetes, confusing it with Type 2, adding to the emotional strain. Despite this, his parents ensured he received annual medical care, which played a crucial role in his health.
Navigating his early years with diabetes was not easy. Misconceptions and a lack of proper guidance on blood glucose management made things challenging, but with resilience and family support, Dong learned to adapt and thrive.
Dong’s passion for cycling ignited in 2011 when he decided to embark on a ride to Lhasa. While preparing for this journey, he discovered Team Novo Nordisk through social media, sparking inspiration that would change his life. Attending the Team Novo Nordisk’ Talent ID camp was a pivotal moment for Dong—there, he met role models and learned valuable strategies for managing diabetes while pursuing his passion for cycling.
Outside of racing, Dong’s life is filled with creativity and community service. He is an avid jade carver and enjoys hiking, camping, and assembling LEGO models. His dedication extends to his community, where he serves as the president of the local Jade Carving Association and leads initiatives as the head of the County Youth League Hope Public Service Center.
